What are thin elements?
Thin elements are very narrow elements of your artwork. Due to the thickness of these elements, they may not print successfully. The reason for this is that when an element is very thin, the surrounding ink colour can bleed into them and fill them in.
As you can see in the image of the spider web below, some elements are very thin and hard to see. These elements are at risk of not printing clearly as the surrounding grey ink is likely to fill these areas in.
Do I need to do anything?
If the thin elements are an area that you don’t consider to be an important part of your design, then you may be happy to leave the artwork as it is.

In the image below, the moth logo will print clearly but the small text and symbols surrounding it are very small. This means that they may not print successfully or legibly. The text surrounding the logo isn’t important to this design as the focus is on the imagery of the jewellery. Therefore this artwork could go to print.

To improve thin elements in your artwork, you can make these large, thicker or use an alternative image.

FAQ’s
Q: My artwork is not editable, how can I increase the thickness of my thin elements?
A: Non-editable files, like JPEGs or PNGs, must be adjusted in the original design software. You may need to contact your designer for edits.
Q: How can I be sure that my thin element will print clearly?
A: View your file at its intended print size (100% scale). If it's easily visible at this size, it will print clearly.
