A custom business card is the ultimate networking tool. Whether you’re just starting out or have a generations-old family business, this small piece of card is mightily effective.

Hand one over when you meet new contacts, or pop into a pitch pack, and people will instantly have a feel for your brand style, vision, and service.

Don’t let the importance of your business card put you off, though! It’s easy to design a business card from scratch (or from our templates) that’ll truly impress your customers.

1. Choose Your Brand Colours

You already have your brand colours, of course. What we mean here is to choose which ones to use on your business card.

This includes any graphics you want to include, too. If you’re adding a photographic image, try to ensure the main colour is complementary to your brand colours. For example if you run a travel agency and you have a blue font as standard, choose a sea-based photo to reflect the colour theme.

2. Choose Your Business Card Size

There’s more to life than the standard 85mm x 55mm business card size! Of course, that’s the classic – but have you thought about branching out?

There are square business cards at 55mm x 55mm, or even mini business cards that are half the height of a standard one.

If you run a creative business, consider choosing an unusual business card size. It’ll help to reflect your unique brand style and show your customers that you want to act on your creative ambitions with your own brand.

3. Keep It Minimal

Your business card needs only the essential information. There’s no need to stuff it full of testimonials, quotes, or anything other than your contact information and business name.

Remember to include your website, email, and phone number.

That’s it!

If you want, add in some social media icons to show which platforms you can be found on, or include perhaps one or two handles. Remember: less is more!

If you want to catch someone’s eye without cluttering your business card design, you can always add finishing touches. For example, Spot UV creates shiny gloss highlights in important areas of your design, such as your company logo. This adds texture and interest to spice up your business card.

4. Go As Luxury As You Can Afford

Touch is really important when it comes to marketing tools. If your business cards feel cheap, your potential clients might think that you’re not going to invest in their custom, either.

Spring for the most luxury you can afford, whether that’s a lighter weight on metallic ice gold paper, or a super-thick 450gsm silk stock business card.
