Why is Purple a Royal Colour?
Ever wondered why we perceive purple to be a royal colour?
According to History.com, purple in royalty dates back to Kings and Queens of the ancient world. It’s believed that the reason for purple’s regal reputation is ultimately down to a simple case of supply and demand but snails also had something a little something to do with it…
Going back to ancient times, purple dyes had to be made from an incredibly rare species of snail that quickly became very valuable. Dye-makers had to crack open the snail shell to extract the purple mucus before exposing it to sunlight for a precise amount of time. This long process could use as many as 250,000 molluscs to yield just one ounce of usable dye, but the result was a vibrant and long-lasting shade of purple. Of course, clothes made from this dye became increasingly expensive and therefore became synonymous with the rich and royalty.
So, with purple being widely associated with royalty, it’s only right that we introduced it to the instantprint website ahead of the coronation!

A Royal Pain
We wouldn’t want your prestigious print to be ruined by small design niggles. Keep the following in mind when crafting your coronation print and ensure it comes out exactly how you imagined!
• Keep foiling at least 3mm away from the edge of your design and don’t place it over a fold
• Delete elements that you don’t want foiling to appear on top of from your original artwork file – foiling can be marginally off, so text and shapes underneath can show
• The smallest font size we recommend for foiling is 8pt
• It’s best to have either a solid area, a detailed pattern, or text rather than mix them on the same design
