What is End-of-Year Burnout?

Burnout. It’s a term that’s hard to ignore, especially as we roll into 2025. After a whirlwind of deadlines, holiday chaos, and the pressure to wrap everything up neatly, burnout is a real issue we can’t afford to overlook. And you're certainly not alone – 94% of UK workers admitted feeling the strain of burnout in the final quarter of 2024.

To gain a better understanding, we surveyed 2,000 UK workers across a variety of industries to get their viewpoint. What we found was eye opening: While more than half (55.5%) said their employers provided support for stress management, a significant 38.76% were left to fend for themselves. That’s nearly two out of five workers navigating the storm with no safety net – no wonder you’re reading this article!

So, what exactly is burnout, and why does it seem to get worse as the year comes to an end? Stick with us as we dive into the causes of end-of-year burnout, how to spot the signs, and most importantly, how to tackle it head on to make 2025 a better year for everyone.

What is End-of-Year Burnout?

Burnout is a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, now officially recognised by the World Health Organization. It often results from imbalances in six key areas at work, as outlined by the Areas of Worklife model by Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter:

  • Workload – Too much work, too little time.
  • Lack of control – Limited autonomy.
  • Reward – Insufficient recognition.
  • Community – Lack of support or positive relationships.
  • Fairness – Unfair treatment.
  • Values mismatch – Personal values not aligning with work.

End-of-year burnout refers specifically to the mental and physical exhaustion that peaks during the holiday season. As we approach the end of the year, the pressure from work deadlines, holiday commitments, and personal goals often accumulates, leading to heightened stress. By the time 2025 begins, the lingering effects of 2024’s fast pace can’t be ignored.

It’s no surprise that 94% of UK workers reported feeling burned out by the end of 2024, with those aged 25-44 particularly affected - 33% of 25-34-year-olds and 52% of 35-44-year-olds struggling to keep up.

Burnout is more than just feeling tired. 58.29% of those who experienced it rated the severity as severe, and 30.81% described it as moderate. Nearly 90% of those affected felt deeply overwhelmed, making the end of 2024 a breaking point for many.

What Led to High End-of-Year Burnout in 2024?

So, what made 2024 such a challenging year for burnout? A combination of workplace pressures, lack of support, and personal responsibilities during an already hectic time. While 54.98% of employees received support from their employers to manage stress, a staggering 38.86% did not. With no help from the top, many employees struggled to juggle mounting workloads and personal obligations.
Burnout also took a toll on performance. The survey revealed some telling results:

  • 44.69% reported increased mistakes and errors.
  • 39.66% had difficulty concentrating.
  • 24.02% missed deadlines.
  • 13.41% found themselves procrastinating more.

And that’s just the start. The mental and physical toll of burnout included fatigue (37.08%), changes in appetite (32.02%), and frequent headaches (19.66%). Not to mention, 14.61% of workers struggled with sleep, and 8.99% experienced weakened immune systems. If you’re not feeling these symptoms yourself, chances are you’ve seen them in your colleagues.

Which Industries is End-of-Year Burnout Hitting Hardest?

The creative sector, with its high pressure deadlines and constant demands, is bearing the brunt of burnout. According to our data, 40.22% of respondents in Creative, Arts & Design felt the impact of burnout. And it’s not just about the work – it’s about the lack of support. While over half of employees (54.98%) got help from their employers, nearly 40% were left to handle burnout on their own.

Burnout is also hitting those in their prime working years hardest. A significant 51.66% of 35-44-year-olds and 32.7% of 25-34-year-olds reported significant stress, largely due to balancing intense career demands with family and personal responsibilities.

Industries like Business & Information, Marketing, and Construction are also facing significant burnout. Tackling this requires a multi-faceted approach, including flexible work options, mental health support, and stress management training. By prioritising employee well-being, businesses can create a healthier and more productive environment.

New Year, New You: How to Avoid Burnout in 2025

The findings from 2024 are concerning, but they don’t have to define the year ahead. By taking proactive steps, you can reduce burnout and create a healthier, more productive work environment.
Here’s what Sean Kachmarski, instantprint’s Health and Wellbeing Specialist, recommends:

  • Flexible Work Arrangements: I’ve found that allowing hybrid or remote work options can reduce stress by up to 35%. Flexibility lets employees balance their work with their personal lives more effectively.
  • Stress Management and Resilience Training: Equipping your team with the tools to handle high-pressure situations can cut burnout by 40%. I run workshops on how to deal with burnout, which has made a real difference, especially as the business enters its peak period.
  • Mental Health Support: Offering Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or access to mental health professionals can improve well-being by 25%. Visibility and accessibility are key. At instantprint, we have posters in all communal areas signposting employees to helpful resources provided by the local authorities and industry charities.
  • Encouraging Breaks and Downtime: A culture that values breaks can improve productivity by 20%, while helping employees recharge and avoid exhaustion. I’ve marked out walking routes for team members that take the duration of a break.
  • Regularly Rewarding Staff: Acknowledging hard work is crucial, especially during high-stress periods. Whether it's small gestures like thank-you cards or more significant rewards, showing appreciation fosters a positive environment and boosts morale. Studies show that expressing gratitude can reduce burnout by 30%. At instantprint, we make sure to recognise individual achievements regularly and celebrate milestones as a team, ensuring everyone feels valued and motivated.

For industries like Creative, Marketing, and Construction, these strategies can be game changers. In fact, I’ve seen businesses cut burnout cases by 50% within six months by introducing mindfulness programs, setting clear boundaries, and actively promoting work-life balance.

The first step in tackling burnout is listening to your team. When employees feel heard and supported, morale improves and burnout fades. By addressing these challenges head-on, you’ll create a workplace where everyone can bring their best self to the table. Let 2025 be the year you put well-being at the heart of your business.

Conclusion

As we look ahead to 2025, it's clear that burnout is not just a buzzword but a critical issue affecting workers across industries. With 94% of UK workers experiencing the strain of burnout in late 2024, it’s time to take proactive steps to address the root causes and create healthier work environments. Whether it’s through flexible work arrangements, stress management training, mental health support, or regular recognition, the strategies outlined in this article can help reduce burnout and foster a more productive, engaged workforce.

The road to a burnout-free workplace starts with prioritising employee well-being, listening to their needs, and offering the right support. By implementing these solutions, you can not only help your team navigate the pressures of the year-end crunch but also set a strong foundation for a thriving 2025. Let this be the year we turn the tide on burnout, ensuring that everyone has the tools and support to bring their best selves to work year-round.
