Understanding font size
Font size is measured in points (pt), where 1 point equals 1/72 of an inch. This measurement is universal across digital and print platforms, allowing consistency in design. The minimum font size we recommend is 4pt for flat or BC print or 6pt for large format, however, it is worth noting that particularly thin and intricate fonts will benefit from being larger than this to ensure their readability.
Do I need to do anything?
If you are struggling to read your text at 100% scale (this is the size of your product), you may wish to increase its size to ensure it will be legible once printed.
How to make small text larger
To increase your font size, go to your character settings and increase the point (pt) size.
Top Tips
-
Use different font sizes to establish a clear hierarchy of information. This helps guide the reader’s eye through the document.
-
View your artwork at its print size. If you can easily read the text at this size, it will be readable once printed.
FAQ’s
Q: How can I be sure that my font size will be readable when printed?
A: View your file at its intended print size (100% scale). If it's easily legible at this size, it will print clearly.
Q: My text isn’t editable, is there a way to make this larger?
A: Non-editable text may result from a flattened file (e.g. a JPEG or PNG). To edit, access the original design program or ask your designer for help.
