K-Bind®:The New Frontier in Lay Flat Book Binding
Unlike many booklets, lay flat books created using the K-Bind® technique have no gap or gutter. Instead, the spreads are printed on single pages and folded down the centred for uninterrupted, panoramic visuals. This means that images can seamlessly flow across the pages and text isn’t broken across the spine, allowing for a fully immersive experience that’s ideal for highly visual publications, such as photobooks and real estate brochures.
Lay flat book binding isn’t a new technique, however we’ve pioneered a unique binding technology we call K-Bind® which produces a perfectly flat book with superior quality to a standard lay flat book. The K-Bind® leaves a neat spine for unrivalled quality, as well as a more robust finish for longer lasting books.
With most lay flat books, a single page is folded in half to create a double page spread that opens up completely flat. For our technique, half of one page is stuck to the back of half of the previous page and the other half is stuck to the back of the next page and so on. This means we use double the amount of material to create these booklets, giving the pages a thicker weight and a luxury overall finish.
Once the inner pages of the book have been bound together to create a ‘book block’, this is then attached to your choice of cover: either a flexible, lightweight paperback case, or a sturdy, luxurious hardback cover.
Our team of world-class bookmakers hand-finish our hardback book covers, by gluing the individual pieces of grey board to a silk cover ready to be bound to the inner pages.
Paperback vs Hardcover Lay Flat Books
When choosing between a hardback or paperback lay flat book, there are a number of things to consider. Firstly, it’s how durable a finish you’re after. Our hardcover option consists of a 150gsm silk stock cover with matt lamination, hand-glued by our team to a sturdy 2500mic grey board. The result is along-lasting finish, often used for special edition publications and collectibles.
Our soft paperback cover books are lighter and more compact, making for a better reader experience, however they’re not as durable as their hardback counterpart, so would be better suited to books that aren’t intended to have as long a lifespan. We offer two stocks for paperback covers: 350gsm silk with matt lamination, which is a thick card-like stock with a smooth finish, or 350gsm uncoated, which is a rougher texture with good ink absorption for writing on.
Hardback books are a more expensive option, making them the preferred choice for limited edition books. If you’re planning on printing long runs, paperback books are more cost-effective.
