Frequently Asked Questions
How is a Threadsewn Book Made?
In thread sewn book binding, individual pages are printed and folded. Folded sections are sewn together creating a superior bind strength. These sections are the secret behind thread sewn books’ durability, and mean there’s no need to use as much glue on the spine. The less glue used, the better the reader experience as the book can open up flatter and more of the page is visible. Once all of the folded sections have been sewn together, this results in a book ‘block’ which is then glued to either a paperback (soft case) cover or hardback (case bound) cover.
The added flexibility thread sewn binding provides also adds an extra layer of durability to the books, increasing the longevity of products that are designed to be used over and over again.
Paperback vs Hardcover Threadsewn Books
Our hardcover option consists of a 150gsm silk stock cover with matt lamination, hand-glued by our team to a sturdy 2500mic grey board, the inside of which is covered by the end paper. This gives a durable and long-lasting finish, often used for special edition publications and collectibles. Soft cover paperback books are a lot lighter and more compact, making them easy to hold and read, as well as transport. We offer a choice of two paperback cover stocks: a silk-coated 350gsm which adds a slight shine and smooth finish, and a 350gsm uncoated option which is rougher and more porous, making it ideal for writing on.
More Printed Pages Than Ever Before
As well as boasting a premium appearance, this complex binding technique allows up to 320 pages to be bound with ease. It also provides added flexibility designed to strengthen books, increasing the longevity of products that are made to be used over and over again. We work with some of the best bookmakers in the world to offer this brand-new option, and our team uses a hands-on approach to ensure every book we print provides unrivalled quality and a perfect finish.
