Creating your own business card design from scratch is one of the best ways to make sure it represents you and what your business is all about. Since Microsoft Word is one of the most popular ways to make a card from scratch, we created this easy, step-by-step guide on how to make your business cards in Word. Here’s everything you need to know!
Step 1: Setting Up Your Document
The first step of how to make a business card in Word is to set up your document to the correct specifications. To do this:
- Open up a blank document in Microsoft Word
- Go to Layout > Page Setup
- Change Paper Size from A4 to Custom Size in the drop-down menu
- Change the dimensions to 91mm x 61mm – this is standard business card size plus 3mm bleed area on each side
Step 2: Adding Your Information
One of the most important parts of your business card is the information you provide on it – this will let your new contact know how and where to get in touch with you. It’s important to include your name, email, phone number, company website and, if applicable, your business’s social media handles.
To add text to your business card design in Microsoft Word:
- Go to Insert > Text Box
- Choose one of the text box styles or ‘draw text box’ option
- Click and drag to draw a text box
- Type your information into the text box
- You can change your font, size and colour under the Home tab
Step 3: Customise Your Design
Time for the fun bit! Give your business card some colour or add your logo and create a business card that’s unmistakably yours. Here’s how.
Adding a background colour
• Go to Design > Page Colour
• Pick a colour from the colour picker*

Adding your logo or other images
To add an image, like your logo to your design:
- Go to Insert > Pictures > This device
- Choose the image you want to include
- Drag and drop your logo so it sits where you want it to on your business card design
Adding shapes
Adding a shape to your business card is a great way to differentiate the design from others. To add a shape:
- Go to Insert > Shapes
- Choose a shape you’d like to add to your design
- Draw the shape by clicking and dragging on your document
- Change the colour, borders and shadows under the Format tab

Step 4: Saving Your Document
You’ve probably added lots of different elements to your business card design, like text and your logo. To make sure everything prints properly and the template stays in the right place, you’ll need to save your file in a way that embeds or flattens these elements – which is easier than it sounds!
The easiest way to do this is to save your finished file as a PDF:
- Go to File > Save As
- Choose where you want to save this file to
- Name your file
- Then, under the ‘Save as type’ drop-down menu, choose PDF
